Born on August 12, 1919, the home of a leading cloth merchant in Ahmedabad, Shri Sarabhai is counted among the greatest scientists of India. He greatly helped the scientists working with him, especially young scientists, to grow.
Sarabhai has contributed greatly in the field of space research in India. He established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad in 1947 and within a short time made it a world-class institution. When scientists saw satellites as an important tool for space studies, the then Prime Ministers Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Shri Homi Bhabha supported the establishment of the Indian National Committee for Space Research, with Mr. Vikram Sarabhai as Chairman. He founded the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on 15 August 1969. Vikram Sarabhai died at Thiruvananthapuram on 30 December 1971 at the age of just 52 years.
