Muthulakshmi Reddy was born in 1886 in Tamil Nadu. At the time when the British government was ruled by India, Doctor Reddy became the first woman to work as a surgeon in a government hospital. Along with this, she became the first female legislator.
The trend of child marriage was very common at the time the Muthulakshmi Reddy was growing up. But Muthulakshmi opposed it and persuaded her parents to educate her.
Muthulakshmi studied at the Maharaja College of Tamilnadu, till that time that college was for boys only. After this he became the first female student to enter the Madras Medical College.
Dr. Reddy sought to increase the age fixed for marriage while working in the Madras Legislative Assembly, along with that he also raised voice against the persecution of the girl child.
It is said that Dr Reddy's sister had died due to cancer, after which she started a cancer institute in Chennai in 1954.
In today's world, it is one of the largest cancer hospitals in the world, where thousands of cancer patients are treated every year.
In 1956, Dr. Reddy was awarded Padmabhushan by the Government of India for his service and work. Dr. Reddy died in 1968 at the age of 81.
